Our research is problem-driven and our main interests are in research that supports decisions about the content or delivery of healthcare. Our interdisciplinary approach incorporates expertise in applied health research designs, health implementation sciences, social sciences, health economics, informatics and statistics, as well as skills in communicating with basic scientists, policy makers, healthcare providers, public and patients. We conduct research at the individual, population and organisational level.
In relation to healthcare we are especially interested in:
- Impact of new technologies – including biomedical technologies such as biomarkers, diagnostic tests, bioengineering products, information technologies
- Psychosocial aspects of health, including psychological therapies and public health interventions
- Healthcare systems, health service delivery and organisation, in the UK and other developed economies, and in low and middle income countries
- Development of applied health research methods
In terms of health conditions, our main interests are in chronic or long-term illness – including disorders often associated with ageing such as stroke and cancer; mental health problems; communicable diseases; genetic disorders.
Our research is funded by a wide range of national and international public and private sector organisations.

LIHS Early Career Networks
LIHS has two early career networks, the Early Career Research Network (ECRN) and the Early Career Academic Network (ECAN). Both offer active peer support for early career researchers and academics and provide a formal link to the Institute’s Senior Management Committee.
Further information for those external to LIHS
If you would like further information about the networks, please contact Bridgette Bewick. We are particularly keen to support the development of networks around the University of Leeds.
