The University of Leeds is one of the largest universities in the UK and celebrated its centenary in 2004.

A number of fine buildings testify to its Victorian heritage. Student numbers are at a record level of over 29,000 with a large number of postgraduate students, many from outside the UK. The Faculty of Arts at Leeds is the largest in the UK and the University's Brotherton Library offers some of the finest facilities in the country for research in the humanities. The recent incorporation of Bretton Hall as a College of the University of Leeds has led to the creation of a new School of Performance and Cultural Industries in the Faculty of Performance, Visual Arts and Communications.
