Introduction
The MA in Medieval Studies enables students to develop a European and interdisciplinary perspective on the Middle Ages; to acquire reading knowledge of one of the languages read or spoken internationally in medieval Europe (Latin, Greek, Arabic or Hebrew); and to acquire the technical, palaeographical, bibliographical and other skills necessary to produce high-level research. All students write a Research Project or Dissertation on a subject of their choice.
As well as taking the core elements described above, students choose from a range of interdisciplinary modules which include 'Representing Women in Medieval Literature', 'Monasticism in the Early Medieval West', 'The Medieval Tournament', 'Vikings, Saxons and Heroic Culture', 'Warfare in the Age of the Crusades' and 'Parish Church and Community'. Single-discipline options on medieval topics are available through the Schools of English, History, and Fine Art.
The IMS community has a strong international character. Both full- and part-time applications are welcome.
