National libraries and museums in the vicinity of Leeds
The British Library Lending Division is the national repository for periodicals and other stock from which its InterLibrary Loan Service is based. BLLD is based at Boston Spa, 10 miles north-east of Leeds , an easy bus journey away. It includes a reading room for the use of visiting readers. Further information may be obtained from the Brotherton Library.
The Royal Armouries Museum contains military and other artefacts formerly housed in the Tower of London. Four of the five galleries are of direct medieval interest: those describing the uses of arms and armour in war, hunting, tournaments and self-defence (the fifth gallery explores armours of the great civilisations of Asia).
Local library, archive and museum resources
The Yorkshire Archaeological Society and the Thoresby Society are based on the edge of the University campus and house a library and archive as well as being a centre for the study of local and regional history. The West Yorkshire Archive Service is also based near the University. Abbey House Museum, one of several museums maintained by Leeds City Museums, stands beside the ruins of the Cistercian Kirkstall Abbey, two miles from the university campus.
