The Contemporary Politics and Society Research Group
(CPS) brings interdisciplinary expertise (political science, history,
sociology) to the study of contemporary France and has close links with Leeds'
Politics Department (Polis) and
with researchers in other universities in the UK and France. The aims of the
group are:
To examine the evolution of politics in France, with
particular reference to the challenge posed to 'traditional' politics by
social movements and non-institutional forms of political mobilisation
To promote the study of the distinctiveness of French
political culture, examining current debates surrounding the notion of 'la
France exceptionnelle'
To analyse and discuss new French writing in the fields
of political science, history and sociology, considering the role of the
'intellectuel engagé'
To foster an interdisciplinary approach to these
issues, drawing on political science, social movement theory, sociology,
history, cultural studies
