Living expenses Learning to budget is a big part of University life

The biggest cost that you will have to meet while you are at university is likely to be your accommodation. At Leeds, we guarantee* university accommodation for your first year (subject to your application being received on time), where the price you pay includes rent, energy costs, insurance for your belongings, internet access, and membership of The Edge, our flagship gym and pool complex.

*For more information on the terms and conditions of our guarantee, visit our accommodation website

To help you plan your likely expenses, in 2013/14 the prices for University accommodation ranged from:

£3,263 - £6,423 for a 42-week contract in self-catering accommodation
£5,216 - £7,081 for a 39-week contract in catered accommodation, where 12 – 14 term-time meals are also included

The prices vary depending on the residence you live in and the type of room you have. Read more about University accommodation

Your other expenses will include essentials such as food, transport and, in private accommodation, utility bills, as well as non-essential spending such as going out. Leeds University Union has guidance about the typical cost of living for students in Leeds, including information on the cost of private rented accommodation, on its website.
