Outstanding sportWe have a justifiably excellent reputation for sporting facilities

We are continually investing in our sports facilities both on and off campus – whether you’re interested in rowing, ultimate Frisbee or climbing you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Our high quality facilities include our flagship £12.2m fitness centre The Edge, located on our city centre campus. The Edge boasts a 25m eight-lane swimming pool with a movable floor and we have swimming lessons for children and adults, as well as a sauna and steam room so you can relax after a workout.

The Edge’s 250 station fitness suite is the largest in UK higher education and has the latest Technogym equipment and Sky TV. Over 140 exercise classes take place per week which range from Pilates and Yoga to Body Pump and Swimfit. We also have dedicated personal training and strength and conditioning rooms with qualified trainers available when you need some extra motivation.

The Edge also houses squash courts, a climbing wall, outdoor court and sports halls where you can play badminton, netball, 5-a-side and much more. Additional studio space, sports halls and squash courts can be found at the Gryphon Sports Centre and Cromer Terrace Gym.

Just three miles off campus Sports Park Weetwood has newly refurbished, high quality pitches for a variety of outdoor sports. International teams regularly use these facilities for training prior to tournaments, such as the Scottish rugby team in the lead up to the Rugby World Cup 2015.

Whatever you get a rush from we have two dedicated outdoor centres in the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District which are perfect for an adventure packed trip of hiking, climbing, caving or mountain biking.

Clubs and programmes

We believe sport has the power to inspire anyone at every level, from the casual gym goer or swimmer right up to the performance sports athletes and coaches. Nothing beats the natural high of personal achievement that you only get from exercise and we have a buzzing sports community with hundreds of clubs and programmes for all abilities from training to competing, coaching to volunteering.

We are proud of our performance sport programme which is dedicated to developing top class sports clubs and individuals at the University. We support athletes at the highest level, creating a professional sporting environment conducive to excellence.

We also have a prestigious Sports Scholarship programme which supports elite athletes as they combine academic and sporting excellence during their time at university. Former scholars include triathlon Olympic medallists Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee.

Hundreds of students at the University take part in our Intra Mural Sport leagues which allow staff and students to take part in recreational sports leagues without the training commitments of our performance clubs.

If you want to try a new sport then our Get Out, Get Active programme could be perfect for you. We have teamed up with Sport England to provide the opportunity to get involved in a range of outdoor activities from rowing to climbing. The programme includes coached taster sessions, trips away and social events. Whatever your interest or time commitment, we’ve got it covered.

We have a sport leadership programme which gives students the chance to improve their employability and learn new skills. Students can choose from numerous coach education courses and we also run academic modules in sport.

Our coaching scholar programme also supports students in attaining a nationally recognised coaching qualification and gaining experience through joining the University coaching team. We are continually evolving the opportunities we provide and there are many routes for students to boost their employability through sport at the University.
