Scholarships - FAQs

What is a scholarship?

A scholarship is a competitive and prestigious award given to students who meet certain criteria. When selecting students for a scholarship the University takes into account factors such as:

  • academic excellence
  • personal circumstances
  • personal achievements
  • interests
  • educational background

The scholarships also include non-financial support such as peer support, pre-registration events, social events, skills workshops and dedicated staff support. Scholarships are designed to not only encourage you to pick Leeds, but also to ensure you make the most of your time here

Unlike the Leeds Bursary, the scholarships are limited in number, although they can be more valuable. Some scholarships can be awarded alongside the Leeds Bursary, depending on household income.

I am studying a one-year foundation course such as Physics with Foundation Studies. Am I eligible to apply for a scholarship?

Unfortunately not; you have to be paying full top-up fees to be able to apply for a scholarship. Keep checking the website and apply in a year's time before you start level one of an undergraduate degree.

I'm a nursing student - am I eligible to apply for a scholarship?

School of Healthcare students (eg Nursing students) are not eligible as your fees are paid by the NHS.

I haven't applied for government funding (student grant and loan) - does that matter?

Yes and no. Yes, we will need to see the confirmation of the final assessment of how much loan and grant you are entitled to from the government. We cannot make any payment to you without this proof of your income level. However, we do not need to see this proof until after you have registered at the University. You may still apply for a scholarship before you apply for the government grant and loan; in fact we encourage you to apply for our scholarships as early as possible!

I already have experience of higher education - am I still able to apply for a scholarship?

Unfortunately not; the scholarships are targeted at students who have not yet had the opportunity to enter higher education.

I have won a scholarship...When will I get my money?

You will receive the money in three instalments, at the end of October, January and April.

Will the money be paid towards my fees or to me?

The money will be paid directly to your bank account. How you choose to spend the money is entirely up to you, but you should probably sit down and work out a budget of your costs for the year to see how best to spend the funding. While it is entirely up to you which support you apply for from the government, we cannot recommend that you reduce the amount you borrow in the form of a tuition fee loan or maintenance loan.

How do I give you my bank account details?

Once you have an Information Systems Services (ISS) username and password you can give us your bank account details securely online.

  • from the University of Leeds homepage www.leeds.ac.uk select The Portal
  • in Secure Access Login enter your username and password.
  • select the Student Services tab
  • in What you can do in Student Services click Log me into Student Services
  • select Financial Aid
  • select Provide bank details for Financial Support Payment
  • in 'Select a term' select the academic year in which you are currently registered. Failure to select the correct academic year will result in the error message: 'No record available for update' when you attempt to submit your details
  • click Submit
  • taking care, enter your UK bank account details accurately. Note: For the purposes of making a BACS transfer you should be quoting an eight-digit bank account number, and six-digit sort-code (with no hyphens or spaces). If you are unsure of either of these, please consult your bank account statement, or check with your bank.

If you do not receive an error message the update of your bank details will have been successful. You will be able to view your bank details by repeating the process if you wish to double-check this.

Your bank details will need to be provided at least a week before any payments are due to be paid into your account. Please note that, unfortunately, we are unable to make direct payments to international bank accounts (including Republic of Ireland accounts).

My financial assessment by the SLC is delayed. How will this affect my scholarship?

That will depend entirely on your circumstances, but we are here to help you. The Scholarships Team will be able to provide help on a one-to-one basis and in some cases we will be able to release early payments to you.

I'm intending to study as a part-time student; can I apply for a scholarship?

We have one scholarship that targets part-time students, the part-time Dangoor Scholarship. Details of other sources of funding available to part-time students, including the part-time bursary can be found on the Lifelong Learning website. Unfortunately all other scholarships require the recipients to be paying full top-up fees.

I'm transferring from another university and starting at level 2 (i.e. as a second year) here at Leeds; am I eligible to apply for a scholarship?

You are not eligible to apply for a scholarship, but you will be awarded a Leeds Bursary provided that you meet the eligibility criteria.

I'm an international student - am I eligible to apply for a scholarship?

You are not eligible to apply for any of our pre-entry scholarships as detailed on these pages. Check your prospective school's web pages as well as the International Office's web pages

However, once you have registered you may be eligible to apply for the BP Scholarship

I'm intending to study as a postgraduate; do any of these scholarships apply to me?

No, these scholarships target undergraduates only. Information on the postgraduate scholarships we offer can be found at http://scholarships.leeds.ac.uk

Do I need to have been given an offer to study at Leeds before I can apply for a scholarship?

No, you do not need to have an offer from us before you apply. If you are subsequently unsuccessful in gaining a place to study with us, your scholarship application will simply be withdrawn. The most important thing is that you get your scholarship application form to us by the relevant closing date.

I didn't realise that these scholarships existed, will late applications be accepted?

Late applications cannot be accepted without proof that the form was posted in good time to reach the University before the deadline.

Can I apply for more than one scholarship?

Yes! You should apply for as many as you think you are eligible for; and even if you only apply for one, we will automatically consider you for other scholarships if you meet the criteria and deadline for them.

However, we are committed to helping as many students as we can with the funding so even if you are successful in your application for several scholarships you will normally only receive the award of highest value.

Can I have a scholarship and a Leeds Bursary?

That depends on the scholarship you have won; if you receive a Robert Ogden, Leeds, Achievement or Social Enrichment Scholarship you will not be able to receive the Leeds Bursary as well. Any other scholarship can be held along with the Leeds Bursary.
