Leeds Bursary FAQsAll your questions answered about the Leeds Bursary

Information for new UK undergraduate students starting a course in September 2011.

The Leeds Bursary is a grant for UK undergraduate students. To qualify you must be a full-time student studying for a degree at the University of Leeds, and have a family income of £36,600 or less. There are some exceptions too.

How do I apply?

Apply to the Student Loans Company (SLC) to be financially assessed for student support. On your application form you must give consent for information to be shared with us for bursary administration purposes. Any family members whose income is assessed must give their consent too, and you must also give a valid National Insurance Number.

Did I give my consent to the SLC?

If you are not sure if you gave your consent or provided a National Insurance Number, you can check by contacting the SLC on 0845 603 4016. When you call you will be asked to give your customer reference number (formerly known as the ART ID and pin number). Any family members who want to change their consent must contact the SLC separately.

How much Leeds Bursary will I receive?

The amount of bursary you get depends on the SLC assessment of your household income. Information on the Leeds Bursary homepage shows how much you might receive.

When will I get written confirmation of the amount?

During the autumn term. We can only confirm the level of your Leeds Bursary once the SLC share your data with us.

When will I get the bursary?

50% of the bursary will be paid in January 2012 and 50% in April 2012, directly into your bank.

How do I give you my bank account details?

Once you have an Information Systems Services (ISS) username and password you can give us your bank account details securely online.

  • from the University of Leeds homepage www.leeds.ac.uk select The Portal
  • in Secure Access Login enter your username and password.
  • select the Student Services tab
  • in What you can do in Student Services click Log me into Student Services
  • select Financial Aid
  • select Provide bank details for Financial Support Payment
  • in 'Select a term' select the academic year in which you are currently registered. Failure to select the correct academic year will result in the error message: 'No record available for update' when you attempt to submit your details
  • click Submit
  • taking care, enter your UK bank account details accurately. Note: For the purposes of making a BACS transfer you should be quoting an eight-digit bank account number, and six-digit sort-code (with no hyphens or spaces). If you are unsure of either of these, please consult your bank account statement, or check with your bank.

If you do not receive an error message the update of your bank details will have been successful. You will be able to view your bank details by repeating the process if you wish to double-check this.

Your bank details will need to be provided at least a week before any payments are due to be paid into your account. Please note that, unfortunately, we are unable to make direct payments to international bank accounts (including Republic of Ireland accounts).

My financial assessment by the SLC is delayed. How will this affect my bursary?

We will be notified of your household income once you have been fully assessed by the SLC. Your payment will not be affected if your assessment is complete by January 2012.

My family income has fallen since the financial assessment. What should I do?

Contact the SLC to ask for a reassessment. If they find a change in your assessed household income they will tell us and we will adjust your Leeds Bursary entitlement.
