The Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence (JMECE) at the University of Leeds was inaugurated on 9 March 1999. It is one of a small number throughout the world intended to stimulate and support inter-disciplinary research on the EU, teaching and learning about 'European integration' in universities and other higher education establishments, and to provide a resource of expertise and advice on contemporary policy issues. Its four core founding Jean Monnet chairs (in business, European studies, law and politics) are part of international research communities that extend to many disciplines, including the humanities, science, computing and medicine. The JMECE is based in the Institute of Communication Studies in the Faculty of Performance, Visual Arts and Communications. A list of JMECE Members and Associates is available here.

The JMECE:
 - Engages with policymakers across the world on contemporary issues, providing expert advice and input to EU agencies and national governments and parliaments
 - Provides a forum for independent debate, organising seminars, symposia and conferences for a wide-range of bodies, including the public
 - Participates in international research networks with academic institutions and private sector industries and organisations
 - Participates in regional and local activities in the UK and throughout the EU
 - Is a founding member of the SENT network on European studies spanning 70 universities across Europe (list of SENT members)

There is a brief biography of Jean Monnet here.
