Postgraduate Study


This section provides details of the supervision expertise of KRH team members.

We welcome enquiries from graduates interested in undertaking doctoral research on Korea-related issue.

Those interested in undertaking a PhD on Korea's relationship with either or both Japan and China, or the East Asia region as a whole, should visit the White Rose East Asia Centre (WREAC) website at: www.wreac.org. A number of KRH members are also WREAC members.

The School of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield currently offers an MA in Modern Korean Studies; the KRH team plan to develop additional Korea-related programmes in the future.

Professor Christoph Bluth

Professor Christoph Bluth supervises students in the area of South Korean politics, South Korean foreign and security policy, North Korea, North East Asian security. He currently supervises Park Min-hyoung on the ‘US-ROK Alliance’, Ryu Sun-hye on ‘The Six Party Talks and North East Asian Security Co-operation’ and Tim Page on ‘Russia and North Korea’ and Yukari Fujiwara on ‘Japanese Security Policy and North Korea’

 
Dr Judith Cherry MBE

Dr Judith Cherry MBE supervises students carrying out research in the areas of Korean foreign direct investment, Korea-EU relations.

Dr Cherry recently supervised  Shin Seung-hoon at the School of East Asian Studies, University of Sheffield, who submitted his PhD thesis on ‘Korea's Bargaining Power and Inward Foreign Direct Investment Policy’ in August 2007.

 
Dr Christopher M. Dent

Dr Christopher M. Dent’s areas of research supervision are: Korea’s foreign economic policy; Korea’s free trade agreements; Korea’s situation in East Asia’s regional economic affairs and regionalism; Korea – European Union relations. Dr Dent teaches a Masters degree course on ‘Korea: Politics, Economy and International Relations’.

 
Professor James Grayson

Professor James Grayson’s areas of research supervision are: Korean and East Asian religions (including Christianity); anthropological studies of contemporary Korean society; folklore; modern and contemporary history.

Professor Grayson supervised Kim Sungsoo’s thesis on the Korean Quaker leader, Ham Sokhon and, from September 2007, he will be supervising Kevin Cawley at the School of East Asian Studies, University of Sheffield. Kevin’s thesis topic is ‘The Deconstruction of Chosŏn: An Investigation into the Philosophical Inter-textuality of Korean Philosophers and Their Influence on Social ‘Realities’ during the Chosŏn Dynasty (1392-1910)’.

 
Dr Andrew Killick
Dr Andrew Killick undertakes research supervision in the area of ethnomusicology; he is currently supervising Kwon Hyunseok at the Department of Music, University of Sheffield who is writing an MA dissertation on ‘The Promotion and Preservation of Cultural Heritage in Kyŏngsangnamdo Province’ for submission in August 2007.
