The Legal Professions and Organisations

Introduction

A variety of professions and interest groups make up the legal "community". They are a community in that they share a common field of interest, but they are not a community in the sense that they all work for the same objectives. Indeed, it has been the concern of successive governments that there is no legal "system" at all and that different official agencies tend to operate in isolation from each other or even in opposition. This perception has been most keenly felt in regard to criminal justice, which has therefore been subjected to forms of review and coordination during the past decade. An example is the Criminal Justice Coordination Councils set up under the Criminal Justice Act 1991.

In this section of UK Law Online, the personnel of the legal system (the focus will be on England and Wales) will be outlined according to the following headings:

Court personnel: judiciary, officials, juries

Legal professionals: barristers, solicitors, executives and others

Legal academics

Legal interest and pressure groups
