Scope

These pages cover the relations between police and citizens as affected by the formal legal powers which the police can exercise. It is not intended at this stage to cover the wider forms of accountability owed by the police for their policies and actions, especially to local police authorities.

Another limitation is that these notes relate primarily to England and Wales. Police powers in non-terrorist cases in Northern Ireland are almost identical (though based on different sources), but police powers in Scotland are very different.
