Reporting Dangerous Driving

  • Have you ever been subjected to an offence such as a driver narrowly missing you whilst using a mobile phone? Have you ever been a victim of road rage?
  • Always have a pen and paper with you.
  • It also helps to have a camera with you. For many, this is likely to be a camera phone. Have you thought of using it? A camera can help you gather supporting evidence.
  • Make a note of the time and place, type and colour of the vehicle and registration plate.
  • Obtain names and contact details of any witnesses who may be present.
  • Telephone 0845-6060606 and ask to be put through to the Traffic Office of the division where the incident happened. If no-one answers, ask for the help desk of that division and leave a message for the traffic officer to ring you back.
  • The University's Student Liaison Officer is happy to discuss any bad driving incidents involving cyclists. Her name is Carole Munsey, PC2544. Tel 0113-2053025/ 07789-753400.

Crime Prevention

Look after your bicycle and stay on the right side of the University authorities by following a few basic rules: park your bicycle only in areas designated for bikes (please don't attach to railings etc); have your bicycle security-coded and show the label clearly; use a bike which looks inconspicuous (if you have an expensive or expensive-looking bike, park it away from view in a covered stand); don't skimp on your security budget: purchase a decent heavy-duty D-lock; secure your bicycle frame to the bicycle railing using the D-lock; remove your pump, lights and quick-release components such as wheels; and lock your wheels together with your frame.

The truth about bike crime: how to beat the thieves - Simon Usborne of 'The Independent' offers some useful advice (July 2008). More advice is provided by Andrew Gilligan of the 'London Evening Standard', February 2009.

Even more advice, including information about how thieves operate, is contained on the website of Quickrelease.tv.
