Rough Drafts: Life Drawing Workshop with Karen Babayan

Saturday, 9 June 2012, 1.30-4pm

Life drawing is the traditional cornerstone of art training and is a meaningful discipline that artists return to again and again. The Gallery’s new display, ‘Rough Draft’, is a celebration of the drawing process, focusing on the exploratory sketches of painters, sculptors, printmakers and designers from the University Art Collection.

In connection with the display, this life drawing workshop, led by the artist Karen Babayan, looks at a variety of different approaches and techniques. Practicing eye-to-hand coordination and measured drawing, experimenting with mark-making, surface texture and shape to analytical studies of light and shade, and finally to working with colour in drawing.

Free workshop, but places are limited so please book your place in advance by e-mailing gallery@leeds.ac.uk, phone (0113) 343 2778, or online at http://roughdrafts.eventbrite.co.uk/

Collections for the Future: Talk and Tour by Chris Sheppard and Beccy Shipman

Saturday, 23 June 2012, 11am-12.30pm

By the end of 2012, the University Art Collection will be digitised and housed in an online image database. To mark the launch of the database, the Gallery's 'Paper Trails' exhibition shows some of the collection's hidden treasures, soon to be accessible to a worldwide audience through the web.

While this is undoubtedly a cause for celebration, the digitisation of rare objects and artworks also has the potential to change the way we perceive and interact with them, raising questions about what the collections of the future will look like.

In a follow-up to the popular 'Archives for the Future' event, join Brotherton Fellow Chris Sheppard and Digital Content Coordinator Beccy Shipman, for a talk on the future of the collections, accompanied by a tour of the Library's new digitisation studio. There will be a chance to see the large format scanner in action and find out more about the digitisation process. Other great items from the collections will also be on show.

The group will meet at the Gallery but the talk will take place in Special Collections, which is upstairs in the Brotherton Library.

Free workshop, but places are limited so please book your place in advance by e-mailing gallery@leeds.ac.uk, phone (0113) 343 2778, or online at http://collectionsfuture.eventbrite.com/

Henry Tonks and the Portraiture of Disfigurement: A Talk by Dr Andrew Bamji

Wednesday, 27 June 2012, 5.15-6.15pm

The influential artist and surgeon, Henry Tonks (1862-1937), taught at the Slade School of Art from 1892 to 1930. There, he tutored many students who would go on to become successful artists in their own right, including Malcolm Drummond, Spencer Gore and Stanley Spencer, all featured in the Gallery’s current ‘Rough Draft’ display.

After the outbreak of the First World War, Tonks returned to medicine and was commissioned to produce drawings of facial war wounds, as a key member of the team responsible for pioneering plastic surgery. This fascinating character has been the subject of two recent novels by Pat Barker, Life Class (2007) and Toby’s Room (forthcoming).

In this talk, Dr Andrew Bamji will focus on Tonks’s surgical drawings and paintings and, drawing from patient case studies, discuss his technique, motivation and interaction with the surgeons at Aldershot and Sidcup.

Dr Andrew Bamji is the Gillies Archivist for the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS). The WW1 records of about 2500 soldiers treated at the Cambridge Military Hospital, Aldershot, and the Queen’s Hospital, Sidcup, are now held by the Royal College of Surgeons, London, together with over 70 pastels by Henry Tonks.

Free event, all welcome. No booking necessary but limited seating so please arrive early.

Write Me a Picture: Creative Writing Workshop with Suzannah Evans

Saturday, 30 June 2012, 1.30-4pm

Award-winning poet Suzannah Evans is back to lead a creative writing workshop inspired by the Gallery’s treasures on paper. Many pieces in the 'Paper Trails' exhibition have ambiguous histories or uncertain origins, so the workshop will focus on the stories behind the artworks and the journeys they’ve taken before finding a home in the University Art Collection.

Participants are also invited to submit their poetry to a Gallery competition running as part of National Poetry Day 2012 (4 October). The winners will have opportunity to read their work for a recording, to be placed alongside the artwork that inspired the poem. Deadline for submissions is Friday, 20 July 2012.

Free workshop, but places are limited so please book your place in advance by e-mailing gallery@leeds.ac.uk, phone (0113) 343 2778, or online at http://creativetrails.eventbrite.com/
