On 20 May 2005, Dr Susan Powell deposited items belonging to Martyn Wakelin, and items relating to the production of the Linguistic Atlas of England with the LAVC .
Martyn Wakelin's papers were given to Susan Powell by his widow following his death. Wakelin was Co-Editor of Survey of English Dialects Basic Material volume IV: The Southern Counties (1967-1968), with Harold Orton; an undertook a PhD with the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies. His papers include correspondence relating to the Survey of English Dialects, items relating to his research and lectures on Cornish dialects (including papers concerning the publication of his 1969 PhD thesis, 'Studies in the Linguistic Geography of Cornwall' (LAVC/SRP/1/020)), and papers relating to his research and lectures on the Survey of English Dialects and English dialects in South Wales. The papers, when catalogued, will be incorporated into the Institute Staff Papers subfonds as LAVC/STA/6: Martyn Wakelin Papers.
Susan Powell was formerly employed as a Research Assistant on the Linguistic Atlas of England. Her papers include various items relating to the editing and production of the LAE (including lists of notions to be mapped, draft maps, minutes of editorial meetings, and correspondence with Stewart Sanderson and John Widdowson); photocopies of her collection of press cuttings relating to Harold Orton and the Survey of English Dialects; and photographs of Harold Orton and Stewart Sanderson with the Duchess of Kent (1974), and the "LAE team" reunited at the LAVC conference in March 2005. The papers, when catalogued will be incorporated into the Linguistic Atlas of England subfonds as LAVC/LAE/1/4: Susan Powell Papers.
The Leeds Archive of Vernacular Culture online catalogue and new web pages were officially launched on Tuesday 28 June 2005. This event was marked by a reception at Leeds University Library, including a presentation and demonstration of the LAVC online resource.
To celebrate the launch of its new distributed Spokes system, the Archives Hub is holding a free event on Wednesday 13 July 2005 that will celebrate innovative projects in the archive community. A number of speakers will be attending the event to talk about a range of exciting projects, including the Leeds Archive of Vernacular Culture. The event will take place from 10.30am - 4.15pm at Manchester Conference Centre (five minutes' walk from Manchester Picadilly railway station).
