Leeds Institute of Genetics, Health and Therapeutics (LIGHT)
Research
LIGHT is a research intensive institute that prides itself on cutting edge research techniques. Our impressive £10m LIGHT Laboratories, funded by the Science Research Investment Fund in October 2004, now contain a mixture of clinicians and scientists all working in close collaboration.
Our research mainly focuses on basic and applied research that will help to explain the aetiology and pathogenesis of common chronic diseases, thus contributing to alleviating morbidity and mortality. We do this by providing an improved scientific rationale on which to base both prevention strategies in populations and improved treatment and disease management in the clinic.
For more information on our research income, and case studies of some of our grants, please go to our research grants page.
The Institute is organised into Divisions that reflect our research themes; Biostatistics, Cardiovascular and Diabetes Research, Cardiovascular and Neuronal Remodelling, Epidemiology, Medical Physics and Reproduction and Early Development. Researchers from these groupings work with multidisciplinary research centres and organisations all over the world where our staff work collaboratively on high impact studies.
Postgraduate Research Opportunities
A wide range of postgraduate research opportunities are available in LIGHT, with a focus on research into common chronic diseases (including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and reproductive health) in order to contribute to disease prevention and improvements in the delivery of patient care.
For Non-EU Candidates we have 'The Postgraduate Research for International Health Scholars' (PRIHS), a new initative within LIGHT, which offers a streamlined process for PhD applications from full time international students that have already secured funding for their studies.
Developmental Support for Early Career Researchers
A new initiative is taking shape at the Leeds Institute of Genetics, Health and Therapeutics for Early Career staff including academics, researchers, postgraduate students and research technicians. The aim is to improve career development for early career researchers within the Institute through regular events, funding for pilot studies and to raise awareness at Institute meetings of the need for early career development.
