MBChB

MBChB Year 2

Public Health teaching is delivered in the MBChB Curriculum within an integrated core unit (ICU) entitled 'Individuals and Populations' that spans Years 1 and 2 of the medical undergraduate curriculum.

In Year 1 the focus is on 'The Individual in Society', and in Year 2 the focus is on ‘Population Health’.

Years 1 and 2 share a common course management team to assure integration of key material.

As part of Individuals and Populations in Year 2, students are allocated to a voluntary sector organisation in a local community. The placement aims to place public health in context with medical practice from an organisational perspective and to help students understand the role of, and tensions between, the statutory and voluntary sectors. The placement is typically half a day and is very successful and highly valued by students and voluntary sector placement providers alike.

In addition, teaching is provided in medical statistics and epidemiology.

MBChB Year 4

In Year 4 students will deepen their understanding of the principles of Public Health and Internationalism that relate to Year 4 specialties including: epidemiology; health needs assessment; health inequalities; policy context; socio-political environment; methodologies for audit and service evaluation. Public Health principles will be taught within the SSC module, and also in linked aspects of each ICU. Students will learn that clinical medicine has to be integrated with the basic sciences that underpin it, and an understanding of wider public health and international issues.

Year 2 Individuals and Populations ICU Contacts

All members of ICU staff are based in the School of Medicine.

For most purposes Sam and Charlotte will be your first point of contact for non-academic issues and will signpost you to appropriate resources (or people) if they cannot help you themselves.  Laura Stroud and Graham Law are responsible for academic content, and can be contacted directly on any issue related to academic matters or quality.
