Language
in the media: representations, identities, ideologies
The first Leeds conference on 'Language in the Media' took
place from 12-14 September 2005. Over 50 participants came
to Leeds from many different countries including Canada, the
US, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Finland, Sweden, Germany,
Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Spain and the UK, including four
keynote speakers: Jane Hill (University of Arizona),
Alexandra Jaffe (California State University, Long Beach),
Deborah Cameron (University of Oxford) and Elena Semino (Lancaster
University). Papers explored a range of topics including both
the way in which language-related themes are represented in
the media as well as looking at how linguists themselves might
communicate more effectively with and through the media. Contributions
included work on media in all its forms including newspapers,
radio, television/cinema and computer-mediated communication
with participants coming from a range of disciplines including linguistics, education, anthropology,
psychology and communication/media studies as well as from
the BBC.
