Health Checks for over 40s heart

NHS Health Checks are being offered to everyone aged between 40 and 74

The check is to assess your risk of developing these illnesses:

  • Heart disease
All diseases that affect the heart and blood circulation are referred to as heart or cardiovascular disease. A cholesterol blood test is used to check whether the level of fatty deposits in your circulation system is too high, which is an indicator of likely heart disease

  • Stroke
This happens when an artery carrying blood to or from your blain is temporarily blocked by a blood clot, or sometimes when an artery bursts. When this happens not enough oxygen reaches your brain, which can damage the way your body and brain work

  • Kidney disease
Occurs over a long time, and does not usually cause any symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage. As well as cleaning your blood and helping to control your blood pressure, kidneys also produce essential chemicals that help keep your heart, muscles, and bones healthy

  • Diabetes
Your body uses insulin produced by your pancreas to process glucose. Diabetes arises where there is not enough Insulin produced by the pancreas, no insulin produced, or the insulin produced does not work properly. Extra glucose in the blood can cause stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, blindness, blood vessel damage, and nerve disease

The Government predicts these checks on patients over 40 will prevent as many as 9,500 strokes and heart attacks each year, and we are enthusiastic to support this target

The Health Check will be performed by a nurse and should take about 20 minutes.  It will include measuring your blood pressure and weight, questions about your family history, and smoking status.  We will also offer you a blood test to check your cholesterol level (heart disease), and a urine glucose test to check for Diabetes

There is no need to contact us to request a Health Check, as we will telephone or write to you and invite you to attend
