Conference Day – Monday 8th July 2013

‘Making the most of your Research’

Weetwood Hall, Leeds

The Faculty of Medicine and Health are holding a Conference Day for postgraduate research students and postdoctoral staff within the Faculty. The theme of the Conference is ‘Making the most of your Research’.

The Conference will take place on Monday 8th July from 9.30am (registration from 9.00am) to 5.00pm at Weetwood Hall Conference Centre

The Conference will comprise:

Research students in the Faculty within their 1st year or starting their 2nd year are expected to present a poster (A1 size, designed to communicate their research to non-specialists). The oral presentation (10 minutes) is for students in the final stages of their postgraduate degrees or postdoctoral staff.

The Faculty of Medicine and Health training team will fund the cost of producing your poster with Media Services, so there will be no cost to you for presenting your work at the Conference. Prizes will be given for the top three posters, top three oral presentations and top three 3-minute thesis talks, as judged by a selection of staff from within the Faculty and presented at the end of the Conference.

If you have not attended the training sessions but have a research poster which has been presented recently at another event, you can also present this poster at the Conference Day.

Increasingly, researchers need to be able to communicate much more widely about the overall aims of their research and its implications to a variety of different audiences including; decision makers, researchers from other disciplines, the media, potential funders and the general public. Explaining your work to other people is an important skill which is an essential part of “networking” and will be useful to you throughout your career. Furthermore, attendance at this event will contribute towards your required generic/transferable skills training as part of your Training Plan.

Weetwood Hall is a well equipped venue with plenty of free parking. A hot lunch will be provided in one of the restaurants at Weetwood Hall and therefore, it is essential that you book a place on the Conference. If you just turn up on the day, you can attend the Conference but we will be unable to offer you lunch.

This event is a fantastic opportunity to get to know your colleagues and to discuss your ideas with students and staff from across the Faculty. Exciting developments happen when researchers from different disciplines get together, so who knows what research ideas, collaborations or opportunities your presentation could generate.
