Selection is bound by the University’s Policy on Equality and Diversity, which is available from the University's Equality Unit.
The School’s Admissions Committee annually reviews the Admissions Office’s implementation of University policy. Positive action is being taken to encourage applications from a diverse range of applicants and groups. Selection decisions are made strictly on the basis of merit and the applicant’s ability to meet academic and non-academic criteria.
An ongoing ethnic monitoring scheme has been set up.
This Code of Practice is also consistent with the "Guiding Principles for the Admission of Medical Students" statement from the Council of Heads of Medical Schools (see http://www.medschools.ac.uk/Publications/Pages/Guiding-Principles-Medical-Students.aspx).
All admissions staff undertake regular training. UCAS form assessors are trained to apply agreed selection criteria consistently. Interviewers are trained to avoid making assumptions about applicant’s suitability on the basis of race or gender. Chairs of interview panels are expected to attend at least one day’s training every three years. Other interviewers undergo a rolling programme of regular training, including Equal Opportunities. All staff members and students who take part in the admissions process are issued with detailed guidance on the process and discrimination prevention.
Two or more members of staff are involved at every stage of the admissions process and written records are kept of the UCAS form assessments and interviews. This is in line with the Code of Practice for admission selectors, agreed upon by the School Teaching & Learning Committee.
