The Primary Care intercalated programme began in September 2008 and is offered to medical and dental students over one academic year. The programme is one of two Intercalated programmes offering Primary Care in the UK.

This is a full time degree lasting for one academic year starting in September 2012. There are eight modules, taught over two semesters, including a thirty week clinical placement.

Overview

In order to practise medicine effectively, doctors need more than just clinical knowledge. They need critical appraisal skills and knowledge of research methods so that they can evaluate new and current treatments. They also need the ability to understand social, cultural and psychological determinants of ill health. Primary Care is the ideal setting in which to acquire these essential extra skills.

Feedback from students shows that there is concern that newly acquired clinical skills are forgotten whilst studying for an intercalated degree. The BSc in Primary Care offers clinical placements which will develop clinical skills alongside the teaching of academic skills which are relevant to all medical careers.
