LURE scholars take part in activities organised by Leeds WAMS (Widening Access to Medical School) and by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Widening Participation office.

Savile LURE scholars are engaged with supporting school students in Leeds and West Yorkshire, some via the Brightside Trust initiative. Using Bright Journals, LURE scholars participate in an e-mentoring programme.

Further afield, LURE scholars mentor Malawian school students to encourage them to consider medicine as a career.

Some LURE scholars have become widening participation (WP) assistant facilitators for workshops. This has given them skills in

  • team teaching with staff and students
  • relating to young people in the classroom collectively and individually
  • taking on the role of teacher
  • managing activity-based learning

Medical Students Association

Recently formed, the UK Medical Students Association, UKMSA organises conferences, provides advice to medical students and promotes research by medical students. HR UK LURE scholar Ben Green is on the National Committee.

Supporting medical students in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is recovering from a civil war which lasted more than 30 years and rebuilding after the 2004 tsunami. LURE scholars are helping with this. Inspired by the Medic to Medic charity, Leeds medical students have undertaken e-mentoring, elective placements and research in Sri Lanka.
LURE scholars Sharna Sivayoganathan, Iain Kennedy, Emily Wright, Laure Bretsztajn and Jonny Batty have all visited this beautiful island to support medical students. Read more here.
