The LURE scholarship scheme would not have been possible without generous donations by Sir Jimmy Savile, Heart Research UK, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and the alumni of the University of Leeds. Speaking at the launch of the LURE programme, University Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Arthur said:
“We need talented medical graduates to combine their clinical work with research and teaching, so they can pass on their knowledge and experience to future generations of doctors. I am very grateful to Sir Jimmy, and we both hope others will follow suit.”

Heart Research UK
Heart Research UK has sponsored LURE scholars for a number of years and continues to do so today. The Leeds-based charity, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2007, works to improve research into heart disease and is responsible for many major developments in cardiac care. It is currently working with Leeds University to develop artificial heart tissue and improve millions of lives even further.
Sir Jimmy Savile
Sir Jimmy Savile, Leeds resident and celebrity, has been a generous sponsor of the LURE scheme. In 2008 he pledged £300,000 over five years to support medical research through the LURE scheme. Jimmy was born in Leeds, grew up here and lived here until his death in 2011. He became famous as a DJ, actor and television presenter. He has raised millions for charities through fundraisers and marathons, as well as volunteering regularly in the LGI. In 1971 he was made an OBE and he was knighted in 1990.
Says Jimmy:
“I always thought the road to good health was cigars and whisky. These young people have proved me wrong and I’m not sure what I am going to do about it.”
