Students studying for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Health and Social Care undertake a large percentage of their learning within the practice setting of their relevant profession. An important factor in their development as healthcare professionals that they can learn in the work place and that they can gain experience through contact with experienced professionals and the users of the NHS and other related services.
In the University of Leeds the Faculty of Medicine and Health is underpinning its degrees in Medicine, dentistry and the healthcare professions by a programme of Technology Enhanced Learning. In order to emphasise the importance of learning in the work place, we have developed experience in the areas of Mobile Learning, e-portfolio implementation and the development and use of Skill and Competency Maps. The ALPS CETL has implemented a suite of mobile assessments across healthcare professions working with five Yorkshire Universities and the School of Medicine MBChB undergraduate medical course has used mobile learning to enable undergraduate doctors to assess their progress, reflect on their learning and record evidence of progress.
The outcome of these programmes is that we have considerable practical experience in the implementation of large scale mobile learning programs including the use of e-portfolios for reflection.
Although these skills and solutions have been developed within the context of Health and Higher Education the principles are equally applicable to other subject centres and areas of education where teaching happens in practice environments or businesses where employees are engaging in work based learning.
The Technology Enhanced Learning Team is involved in a number of projects, including:
