Acute Specialist Neurological Rehabiliation Team The liaison rehabilitation medicine service provides disabled people with timely access to rehabilitation while they are still on the acute medical and surgical wards of St James's. Our aim is to ensure high standards of rehabilitation in the acute wards. The inpatient service comprises a Consultant Physician in Rehabilitation Medicine, Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist and Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist. Our team provides rehabilitation assessment and treatment of patients with complicated rehabilitation issues arising from neurological conditions. We work closely with the medical, nursing and therapy staff on acute wards to address the rehabilitation needs of people with neurological conditions admitted to any ward, including HDU and ITU. An important aspect of the team's role is to facilitate appropriate patient flows through the acute services to the inpatient rehabilitation unit at Chapel Allerton Hospital or to the community based rehabilitation. The outpatient service includes a weekly rehabilitation medicine clinic and specialist outpatient occupational therapy and physiotherapy. The therapy departments have excellent links with therapy departments in other parts of the Trust and other NHS trust. In addition, all members of our team are involved in research, management and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Referrals can be made by faxing a consultation request from (0113 20) 65977. To discuss a referral, please ring Dr Rory O'Connor on (0113 20) 66071.
