Hi everyone!

            Feel free to skim read this and jump to what is relevant to you!

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

I’m Beth and I am one of your representatives for the Student-Staff committee. The other year one representatives are Leslie Addy, Hannah Joyce, Gurgit Pandmer and Sara Heath. We meet with other Sport and Exercise Science staff and students three times a year to discuss anything important to us. This includes course content, methods of assessment, methods of teaching and learning, evaluation of modules and quality of teaching, and, School academic policy and University academic policy. This excludes performance of specific members of staff or students.

WHAT WE DISCUSSED AT THE LAST MEETING

Of the matters discussed on the first meeting on the 8th November 2005, I believe the following points are useful for you;

Timetable

Timetable needed more explanation. It was felt that because many of the students did not understand the timetable their choice of electives was particularly limited.

BMSC Modules:

When students e-mailed tutors about problems, very rarely did they receive a reply. It was asked that this could be passed onto BMSC.

Psychology:

This area was very well taught Lectures were enjoyed.

Tutorial Module:

Workshops have been good and useful. Team building exercises were particularly enjoyed.

We also discussed results of the National Student Survey, in which SES was not rated highly in all areas. It was agreed by year two and three students that this was not reflective on student opinions, which were mostly good. The survey is currently being advertised (http://www.thestudentsurvey.com/) but is only for final year undergraduates. I also contacted our lecturers directly after receiving personal enquiries, and emailed the replies to the students involved.

HOW YOU ARE INVOLVED

It is vital that you give us feedback on how you feel and tell us what you want talked about. Do you agree with the matters discussed? One of my points raised was that people weren’t enjoying SPSC 1211, but this was not the conclusion made. There is no point me expressing my own views if these aren’t inclusive of yours. So please contact the year one committee with your views; good and bad. Additionally, let us know if you would like access to the meeting minutes and these can be emailed to you or copies are on a notice board in the SES building. My email address is pss5ekh@leeds.ac.uk and the contacts of the other representatives are in the SES building. The next meeting will either the 7th, 14th or 15th, so now is your chance to raise issues!

            We all want to enjoy our course and have been given the opportunity to try to change what we don’t like. Please tell us what you think.
