Objectives
The overall objective of the module is to develop students' competence in English. On completion of this module, students should have the necessary confidence and linguistic ability and skills associated with communication tasks at interpreter level. The module will give students exposure to a wide range of varieties of English, allowing them to up-grade their present level of language in a modern context, and to distinguish and respond to these different varieties. Participants should be able to summarise both written and spoken language taken from a variety of sources associated with international communication in a relevant environment.
Syllabus
A wide range of authentic material, taken from the media, government documents, international conferences, and various other sources, will be examined for its vocabulary, rhetorical and grammatical structures, pronunciation and intonation. Oral practice will include presentations based on summaries of both recorded and impromptu spoken language, with the aim of communicating coherently and accurately. Written practice will also involve producing accurate summaries of spoken and written input. Emphasis will be placed on enhancing participants' pronunciation skills and developing their understanding of a range of native-speaker accents.
