Objectives
On completion of the module, students will be able to:1.demonstrate a critical understanding of developments in archaeology in the Holy Land and surrounding regions from c.538 BC to 614 AD;2.demonstrate analytical skills in the study of the period through published archaeological evidence;3.demonstrate a critical understanding of problems and controversies which relate to the authenticity of the Biblical narrative.
Syllabus
Return of the Jews from Babylon to the Byzantine Period, 538 BC - AD 614: archaeological evidence for the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem; material background of the Book of Maccabees and Hellenistic and Roman influence; archaeological background to the life of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Gospels.
Form of teaching
Seminars 11 x 2 hours
Form of assessment
2 x 1500 word essays (50% each), one to be submitted by week 7 and one by week 12.
