2002/03 Undergraduate Module Catalogue

CHEM3130
Chemical Bonding and Reactivity
10 credits

Taught Semester 1,

Year running 2002/03

Pre-requisites Level 2 in Chemistry or equivalent.

Co-requisites None

Objectives
On completion of this module the students will have gained an appreciation of the principles of molecular orbital theory, and how it is successful in explaining the many facets of chemical bonding in chemical compounds despite their great diversity. They will also be able to appreciate how the theory can be applied to explain chemical reactivity, and to understand the application of ligand field theory to the chemistry of transition metal compounds.

Syllabus
Atomic orbitals and symmetry. Molecular orbital theory: the LCAO approximation and its application to simple molecules. The Independent-electron Model: application to pi-bonded molecules. Chemical reactivity: the use of molecular orbital theory in understanding chemical reactions. Ligand field theory: molecular orbital treatment of transition metal complexes; the influence of coordination geometry.

Form of teaching
Lectures 18 x 1 hour Tutorials 3 x 1 hour Example Classes 3 x 1 hour

Form of assessment
One 2 hour paper at the end of semester 1 (88%); assessed course work (12%)
