Objectives
To trace some of the major developments in cultural practice since the 1960s. On completion of this module, students should be able to recognise major aspects of social and cultural developments in France since the 1960s; assess critically the links between social developments and cultural change.
Syllabus
Contemporary French culture has changed profoundly since the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s. This module attempts to chart some of the major changes in cultural practice that have taken place and their links with wider social and political changes. The following themes will be treated: postmodernism, identity, memory, the city and popular culture. This will be done through analysis of the following works: Mehdi Charef, Le Re au Harem d'Archi Ahmed; Francois Maspero, Les Passagers du Roissy-Express; Leos Carax Les Amants du Pont Neuf; Sebastian Japrisot, L'ete meurtrier; Alain Finkielkraut, La Defaite de la Pensee.

Lectures: 5 hours. Seminars: 5 hours.
