Portuguese Language and Background Studies 1B

Pre-requisites An A-Level (or equivalent) in a foreign language. Students are also required to have successfully completed Portuguese Language and background Studies 1a in Semester 1 ( or to possess equivalent knowledge before commencing this module).

Objectives
This module aims to equip students with a basic grounding in Portuguese grammar and an ability to produce, understand and translate spoken and written Portuguese in a variety of everyday contexts. All the major grammatical structures will be covered and vocabulary will be built up in key areas of everyday communication. In addition, the module aims to introduce students to the history and culture of the Portuguese-speaking world. The language and history and culture components covered in the first half of this linked module will be further developed in this second half.

Syllabus
Language: This module will consolidate the grammar covered in the module Portuguese Language and Background Studies 1a, introducing all the verb tenses and more advanced grammatical constructions, as well as continuing to expand students' vocabulary range in a variety of lexical fields. History and Culture of the Portuguese-speaking World: Following on from the first half of this linked module, the module aims to introduce students to the history and culture of whichever of the two major areas of the Portuguese-speaking world (Portugal or Brazil) was not covered in SPPO1080. Study of one literary text: Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, "Contos Exemplares".

Form of teaching
The language element of the module is taught via 3 weekly language classes, including regular lessons in the language laboratory and small group work on grammatical, translation and conversation exercises. There will also be one hour per week on Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen's "Contos Exemplares". The history and culture element of the module is taught via one lecture per fortnight.

Form of assessment
A three-hour language examination is held at the end of the second semester to assess the students' linguistic abilities in the areas of grammatical knowledge and written communication. One 10-minute oral examination is also carried out. One assessed essay on the history and culture component of the module must also be submitted by the end of the 2nd semester. 20% of language assessment will be determined by coursework.
