Ways of Praying: Introduction to Ascetical Theology 10 credits

Objectives
On completion of this module students will be familiar with some of the fundamental disciplines and practices of the Christian spiritual life. They will have examined the relationship between liturgy and personal prayer, between reading and meditation, and the theology of intercessory prayer; and learned how to use some of the technical vocabulary of the Ascetical tradition.
Syllabus
The module will address such topics as: spirituality and theology; the psychology of prayer; the theology of intercessory prayer; being and doing; desert spirituality; the monastic quest; individuation and union; incarnation and communion; prophecy and protest; Celtic spirituality and the environment; medieval mystics and the feminine.
Form of teaching
Lectures: 11 x 1 hour; Seminars: 3 x 1 hour.
Form of assessment
Assessed work totalling 3000 words, typically one essay and one seminar paper.
