Vice-Chancellor's Introduction
Always keen to break new ground we are delighted to launch the 2010-11 University International Concert Series with an extra recital and formal series launch at
Leeds Corn Exchange. This season we bring you a truly international programme with performers from across Europe, visitors from the USA and the Indian sub-continent. There will be a series of off-campus concerts this season to bring our programme into the City – and we hope to persuade new concert goers to join us on-campus.
The regular Friday free lunchtime recital series provides a wide ranging programme to suit all tastes – an ideal opportunity to sample an unfamiliar repertoire. These recitals include four concerts recorded by
BBC Radio 3 for broadcast in their own lunchtime recital series, this season featuring both early and contemporary repertoire (Events
11,
13,
23 and
25).
Words and Music have a strong affinity – and in addition to song recitals for our first
Vice-Chancellor’s Recital, we welcome the noted poet and critic Sir Andrew Motion who will be joining pianist Ian Buckle in a programme of Larkin’s poetry and twentieth century piano music.
Works for piano feature strongly in this season's programme with a series of concerts for two pianos, a recital by the popular Leeds Piano Competition Finalist,
Alexander Schimpf and a series of keyboard recitals by Daniel Gordon exploring the
Romantic Fugue and
Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier.
Young artists make a considerable contribution to the series as
Friends of University Art and Music sponsor the FUAM Young Artists Series (Events
2,
36,
39,
45 and
51).
We make three notable excursions into music theatre – with the UK premiere of
Sergey Taneyev's Opera 'Oresteia' (1895) (first act only), a full production in The Great Hall of
Anton Salieri’s Les Danaïdes and, as part of our “away day series”, Halifax Light Opera Society and The University of Leeds School of Music Philharmonia conducted by Ian Sapiro join forces for six performances of
West Side Story in Halifax.
Covering almost every genre of music from the 16th-21st century we hope there will be something here to entertain, enlighten and, perhaps, surprise you.
