BMus is an exciting four-year degree specialising in performance, with the third year spent in a conservatory environment abroad. Current destinations include the USA, Canada, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic (EU subsidies are currently available for study in Europe). You can specialise in western art music or popular and world musics pathways, following academic studies along with colleagues on our other courses. The Year Abroad is an invaluable way to improve your CV, your confidence, your career prospects and your language skills. ABRSM Grade 8 distinction or equivalent in your principal instrumental/vocal study is required at the time of application.

The structure of the BMus (Performance) programme is as follows:

Level 1: 120 credits in total

Music Research Skills (10 credits)
Music in History and Culture (30 credits)
Understanding Music (20 credits)
Performance (20 credits)
Ensemble Performance (20 credits)
Choose 20 credits from:
Composition, Introduction to the Sciences of Music, electives


Level 2: 120 credits in total

Performance (40 credits)
Choose one from:
Music in Context A, Music in Context B (20 credits)
Ensemble Performance (20 credits)
Choose two (40 credits) from:
Psychology of Listening and Performance, Music Technology, Performance, Composition, Aesthetics, Notation & Editing, Interpreting Music, Interpreting Popular and World Music modules, Music in Practice, Ensemble Performance, Music in Context A, Music in Context B, electives


Level 3: 120 credits in total

Dissertation (40 credits)
Performance (40 credits)
Choose 40 credits from:

Admission Requirements

ABRSM Grade 8 Distinction or equivalent at the time of application. In addition to this you will also be required to achieve one of the following (or equivalent):
