School of Music

First Class Facilities

The School is housed in extensive purpose-built premises which marry the renovated 200-seat Clothworkers performance space with a new department, completed at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The four levels of the building comprise rehearsal, performance and practice spaces, electronic studios (including professionally specified recording studios and Pro Tools suites), a psychology of music laboratory, a multimedia computer cluster, study area, lecture theatres and staff offices. Our students perform on the School's superb collection of instruments, including a specially commissioned gamelan, an assortment of excellent historic and modern keyboard instruments and a wide range of orchestral and world percussion.

In September 2010, the School purchased a new Yamaha CFIIIS concert grand piano to supplement the Steinway Model D which was aquired in 2005.

As well as the stunning Clothworkers' Centenary Concert Hall the School makes use of the University Great Hall and a range of theatre and performance spaces in the students' union and elsewhere. Concert life serves the region as well as the campus. Students enjoy the advantage of a large communal foyer space in the School, and this hosts a variety of art exhibitions as well as being permanent home to the Sir Peter Blake Music Art Gallery (a collection of some of the most influential album artwork of the twentieth century).
