Three members of seminal rock band Gang of Four, formed at Leeds University in 1977, returned to the campus on June 26th, 2009, when a seminar on new wave and post-punk attracted a capacity audience. The event, ‘New Wave, New Views: Re-visiting the Post-Punk moment’, was co-organised by Simon Warner of the Music School and Aaron Meskin from the Philosophy department.
Singer Jon King and guitarist Andy Gill, Fine Art graduates of the university, now pursue their band ambitions alongside wider careers – in marketing and studio production. Both were interviewed by Warner and shared their opinions on a range of topics – art and culture, class, politics and music.
Former drummer Hugo Burnham now lectures in music industry matters at New England Institute of Art in Boston, Massachusetts. He gave a paper to the seminar.
Other guests joined the conference. Minnesota State University philosopher Ted Gracyk, one of the premier theorist of the rock aesthetic, provided a keynote paper and Clinton Heylin, the UK’s leading rock biographer and historian of the punk and new wave movements also contributed to the debate.
The occasion, supported by the Leeds University Popular Cultures Research Network with funding input from the Faculty of Performing and Visual Arts and Communication, attracted delegates from around the UK, from Europe and the US.
Said Simon Warner: “Gang of Four proved a vital component to the event. The trio of musicians who joined us made a significant impression on both sides of the Atlantic and made music with a potent political edge. They also proved generous and eloquent participants in this day of presentation and discussion.”
He added that publishing plans are under consideration and that papers delivered at the event were likely to emerge in some format in the future.

Ilan is a British film composer who has established himself as an exciting young talent in the world of film music. Born in London into a musical family, Ilan grew up playing violin and later took up playing guitar in bands. He studied Music and English literature at Leeds University, during which time he also worked with film composer Ed Shearmur learning first-hand the technique of film composition. After graduating, he went on to work with other film composers such as Michael Kamen and Hans Zimmer. At this time Ilan began scoring his own projects, and his talent for creating cinematic music on a limited budget soon gained him recognition within the film industry.
