Following the UK premiere staging of Louis Spohr’s opera Pietro von Abano, Prof Clive Brown, who produced the British unveiling in spring 2009, has been involved in further projects linked to the German composer. The professor has taken a particular interest in Spohr’s output and a recent visit to Kassel - where Spohr was Hofkapellmeister during the final phase of his career - was linked to the launch of a German, revised edition of his volume on the composer.
Louis Spohr. A Critical Biography, which originally appeared in English through Cambridge University Press in 1984, and has now emerged under Merseburger Verlag imprint as Louis Spohr. Eine kritische Biographie.
Commenting on the visit to Germany, Prof Brown said: “The programme of events included a reception at the publishers. I was also invited as guest of honour at a series of concerts each including one of Spohr's chamber works, given by the Kassel Concert Society and gave a public interview about my work on Spohr during the interval of one of the concerts.”
The trip was jointly sponsored by the Konzertverein Kassel and by the publisher Breitkopf und Härtel, for whom Prof Brown is currently editing Beethoven's Violin Concerto.
A subsequent return trip has also occurred. “I have been back to Germany once again,” he explained, “this time to Brunswick, Spohr’s birthplace, to attend the first modern production of his opera Der Alchymist at the Brunswick Opera.”

Ilan is a British film composer who has established himself as an exciting young talent in the world of film music. Born in London into a musical family, Ilan grew up playing violin and later took up playing guitar in bands. He studied Music and English literature at Leeds University, during which time he also worked with film composer Ed Shearmur learning first-hand the technique of film composition. After graduating, he went on to work with other film composers such as Michael Kamen and Hans Zimmer. At this time Ilan began scoring his own projects, and his talent for creating cinematic music on a limited budget soon gained him recognition within the film industry.
