Steve Muir becomes first department member to clinch prestigious teaching award Dr Stephen Muir, the School of Music’s Director of Learning and Teaching, is one of only sixteen members of staff in the University to have been awarded a University Teaching Fellowship Award for outstanding contributions to teaching and the development of student learning.
This Developmental Fellowship provides £4,000 project funding, which Dr Muir will use to enhance the School’s new Year in Industry scheme, developing partnerships with new organisations, and exploring how the music industry could potentially play a more prominent role in the School of Music’s taught programmes.
Reacting to the award, Dr Muir remarked: ‘I am of course delighted for myself – to be recognised in this way is wonderful! But I’m even more delighted for the School of Music. Although I’m the first person from the School to receive such an award, I know there are many others equally or even more deserving than me, and I look forward to seeing them recognised in coming years. It also places the School of Music right at the forefront of Learning and Teaching developments in the University, and that’s something we should all be extremely proud of.’
The University Teaching Fellowship Scheme (UTFS) was established in 2001 to promote and reward excellence in the provision of Learning and Teaching and show the commitment of the University to celebrating good practice. The awards are made by Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Viv Jones and the Pro-Deans for Learning and Teaching. Details of the scheme and other UTF holders are available at http://www.leeds.ac.uk/sddu/lt/fellowship/fellowship.html

Ilan is a British film composer who has established himself as an exciting young talent in the world of film music. Born in London into a musical family, Ilan grew up playing violin and later took up playing guitar in bands. He studied Music and English literature at Leeds University, during which time he also worked with film composer Ed Shearmur learning first-hand the technique of film composition. After graduating, he went on to work with other film composers such as Michael Kamen and Hans Zimmer. At this time Ilan began scoring his own projects, and his talent for creating cinematic music on a limited budget soon gained him recognition within the film industry.
