The Leeds University Liturgical Choir lends a hand on the latest release from a top UK talent as one-time English undergraduate issues second album One of Britain’s brightest young musical talents has been joined by the Leeds University Liturgical Choir on her latest, and long-anticipated, CD release.
Corinne Bailey Rae, a Leeds graduate herself, released her second collection of songs, The Sea, at the start of February and the highly-rated choir was delighted to play a part in the project.
The choir, co-directed by School of Music staff members Drs Bryan White and Stephen Muir, appears on the track ‘Diving for Hearts’.
Bryan White explains that LULC was contacted by the singer in late 2007. The recording work was done in the city, at the start of 2008, at St Margaret’s Church on Cardigan Road near Headingley.
‘The recording was a very different activity for the choir, which is more often found singing at cathedrals throughout the country, giving concerts, or as last year, performing at the Grand Theatre in Leeds with Rambert Dance Company,’ he says.
But the project proved a most interesting one for the choir. ‘The recording itself was actually very atmospheric, taking place at night in a very cold and mostly unlit disused church.’
He says that the principal artist instructed the choir in some of the finer points of the style she was seeking and the altos, who provide a brief solo section on the track, responded sympathetically.
‘The full choir comes in under her solo, singing a brief passage that she composed for track,’ he adds.
A one-time student in the University’s English department, Corinne Bailey Rae has established a significant reputation on both sides of the Atlantic. Her self-titled, 2006 debut album thrilled critics in the UK and US and won fans around the world.

Born in London into a musical family, Ilan grew up playing violin and later took up playing guitar in bands. He studied Music and English literature at Leeds University, during which time he also worked with film composer Ed Shearmur learning first-hand the technique of film composition. After graduating, he went on to work with other film composers such as Michael Kamen and Hans Zimmer. At this time Ilan began scoring his own projects, and his talent for creating cinematic music on a limited budget soon gained him recognition within the film industry.
