Head of School Derek Scott shares some past musical moments with Radio 4 listeners - and poet Ian McMillan Forgotten songs stored in piano stools were the subject of a BBC Radio 4 broadcast fronted by the bard of Barnsley Ian McMillan on February 16th.
Joining the poet in his quest for Victorian and Edwardian ballads that once filled the drawing rooms of England was head of department Prof Derek Scott.
Piano Stool Beethovens reflected on an era when countless composers, now relegated to the realm of history, courted the ear of tens of thousands of amateur pianists.
Along the way, the progarmme also discovered the passions and preoccupations of everyday people from a century ago.
Derek Scott contributed not only commentary but also some musical performance. He comments: ‘I do remember singing some of the touching ballad "Daddy's on the Engine" in which a little girl tells the passengers of a train that is passing though a collapsing tunnel that her daddy knows best and they shouldn't be frightened!’

After graduating, he went on to work with other film composers such as Michael Kamen and Hans Zimmer. At this time Ilan began scoring his own projects, and his talent for creating cinematic music on a limited budget soon gained him recognition within the film industry.
