US journalists under scrutiny in annual contest Music staff member Dr. Simon Warner was one of the judges as the US Association of Alternative Newsweeklies staged its annual awards contest for publications that lie outside the mainstream press - magazines such as the Village Voice in New York and the Seattle Weekly.
The awards span the full range of journalistic activity – from news reporting to feature writing, photography and cartoons – but Warner, a one-time rock journalist with the Guardian, was drafted in to assess the work of top popular music critics.
Joining him were Columbia University’s David Hajdu – author of the acclaimed Dylan biography Positively 4th Street – and Jim DeRogatis, music writer for the Chicago Sun-Times, whose account of the life of rock reviewer extraordinaire Lester Bangs is highly regarded.
Warner, who has served in this judging capacity most years of the last decade, commented: ‘In an age when newsprint is under threat from the free and open access of the internet, magazines like those attached to the AAN are facing testing times. Yet the vigour of their reporting, writing and lay-out remains intact and music criticism continues to be a cornerstone of their coverage.’
The category winners will be announced at a Toronto ceremony in July 2010.

Ilan is a British film composer who has established himself as an exciting young talent in the world of film music. Born in London into a musical family, Ilan grew up playing violin and later took up playing guitar in bands. He studied Music and English literature at Leeds University, during which time he also worked with film composer Ed Shearmur learning first-hand the technique of film composition. After graduating, he went on to work with other film composers such as Michael Kamen and Hans Zimmer. At this time Ilan began scoring his own projects, and his talent for creating cinematic music on a limited budget soon gained him recognition within the film industry.
