Isle of Skye event proves hit for department cello player Department cellist Dr George Kennaway attended a conference in June 2010 which took place in the Isle of Skye on the subject of Scots and Gaelic folk-song.
Entitled ‘̉ran 2010 Sang’, it was hosted by Sabhal Ṃr Ostaig, affiliated to the University of the Highlands and Islands.
He described it as ‘a fascinating event in a spectacular location which attracted me because of my own interest in cello arrangements of Scots song’.
Traditionally, Scots and Gaelic repertoires have been treated as quite distinct, but current thinking is directed at exploring cross-connections between them. Concerts, a celidh and papers gave the event a rich and diverse character.
Adds Dr Kennaway: ‘Several papers were expertly illustrated by student performers, including a group from the USA. This was a particularly stimulating and well-organised conference, and one to which I hope contribute when it comes round again.’
The conference programme and abstracts are still available here.

Ilan is a British film composer who has established himself as an exciting young talent in the world of film music. Born in London into a musical family, Ilan grew up playing violin and later took up playing guitar in bands. He studied Music and English literature at Leeds University, during which time he also worked with film composer Ed Shearmur learning first-hand the technique of film composition. After graduating, he went on to work with other film composers such as Michael Kamen and Hans Zimmer. At this time Ilan began scoring his own projects, and his talent for creating cinematic music on a limited budget soon gained him recognition within the film industry.
