Over the last decade, the University of Leeds School of Music has
established a strong profile in the area of popular, traditional
and world musics, through its activities in learning and teaching,
study and research.
Building on its BA in Popular Music Studies,
launched in 1992, the school has since broadened its scope with
a BA in Popular and World Musics, which came on-stream in 2001,
alongside the opportunity to study Popular Music and Ethnomusicology
at postgraduate level.
PopuLUs, The Centre for the
Study of the World’s Popular Musics, launched in 2004, is
a body dedicated to scholarly activity, both undergraduate and postgraduate.
PopuLUs is based in the £5m
School of Music which lies at the heart of the city campus. The
purpose-built premises, which opened at the beginning of 2003, provide
an impressive range of performance, practice and studio facilities
and lecture theatres, alongside space dedicated to a growing postgraduate
community. The refurbished Clothworkers’ Centenary Concert
Hall, fully renovated during 2004, forms part of the complex.
The Centre brings together the skills and experience
of a staff well versed in the fields of popular, traditional and
world musics, working closely with almost 50 postgraduate students
and over 300 undergraduates, around a third studying for the BA
in Popular and World Musics.
