School of Music

Research Context

The School balances musical studies of performance, composition & critical & historical studies, with developing areas such as popular music, world musics & music technology.

The School of Music promotes a diverse but coherent portfolio of research, encompassing art, popular and world musics, performance, technology, psychology, composition and musicology. Our holistic view of research is informed by critical, archival, empirical, ethnographic, historical-cultural, interdisciplinary and practice-led approaches, and spans the medieval period to the modern-day and the music of four continents.

Researchers in the School are recognised internationally as leaders in their field, and supervise a postgraduate research community of around sixty students from the UK and overseas. Collaborative research is a distinctive feature of the School's profile, and a range of innovative projects have arisen from close links with other schools (for example, Interdisciplinary Gender Studies, Performance and Cultural Industries, and Computing) and other institutions, facilitated by the Worldwide Universities Network, grants from UK and European partners, and the University's creative partnership with Opera North.
