School of Music
Research Centres & Groups
The School balances musical studies of performance, composition & critical & historical studies, with developing areas such as popular music, world musics & music technology.
Research activity in the School of Music is focused around five research centres, each representing a particular strength in the School's profile:
- The science of musical sound;
- Popular, traditional and world musics;
- Historically informed performance;
- Opera studies; and
- English music
In addition, Music was a founding School in the faculty-wide, interdisciplinary Centre for Practice-Led Research in the Arts (CePRA), which supports composition, technology and performance research conducted according to rigorous criteria.
The School also establishes research groups and networks to develop fresh synergies, and to encourage new areas and initiatives to emerge. All of these initiatives inform the undergraduate courses offered at Leeds and feed into our postgraduate programmes
