Ewan is a member of Interdisciplinary Centre for Scientific Research in Music, Sonic Arts Network and Leeds University Group for Improvised Music. He is actively involved in collaborative projects, particularly in the field of improvised music incorporating live electronics. His primary research interest is live or acousmatic electroacoustic composition. Recent compositions include works commissioned for guitar, trumpet, percussion, brass ensemble and various electroacoustic events. Ewan's works have been performed internationally for over 10 years now. Subjects of recent compositions have included the use of spoken voice within programmatic acousmatic music. Collaborations with performers have been concerned with the use of improvisation and interaction between performer and computer. Ewan is also interested in microtonality, which features in several of his electroacoustic works. Compositions such as SansCulture explore the integration of popular and avant-garde musics and he is interested in questioning the conventional boundaries of musical genres. Ewan's current research interests include investigation of the use of video in an acousmatic performance context and ongoing experimentation with sound diffusion and surround sound in a performance context. He is also continuing to create programmatic works designed for smaller listening environments inspired by the work of Jarman, Chion, Dhomont and others.
