This exciting four-year degree allows BA students in the School of Music to spend their third year working in the music industry, taking internships with such major music organisations as Warner Music, Manchester Camerata and London Symphony Orchestra. Students are encouraged to explore a wide range of other possible placements, including music therapy, orchestral management, music education and outreach, and band management. Placements may be in the UK or abroad.

Students starting on the BA course will have the option of transferring onto this degree at the end of their second year. In order to be accepted onto the Year in Industry, students are expected to have a strong first- and second-year academic profile, and demonstrate reliability and commitment.

A Year in Industry is an invaluable way to improve your CV and boost your confidence. It is an excellent way to experience the day-to-day running of a music business and enhance your employability. Incorporating the experience into your degree programme is an ideal way of overcoming the practical and financial barriers that face graduates seeking internships. You may even be paid or receive travel expenses during your year in industry!

Whilst on your placement you will receive a great deal of support and training from the Careers Centre and the School of Music, including pre-placement training, a workplace visit, and regular phone/email contact. Upon returning to Leeds, you will give a presentation and be interviewed about your experiences.

"I enjoy taking challenges and gaining experience, so the 'Year in Industry' programme immediately attracted me. I was excited by the prospect of getting involved in the industry and to develop those important skills required for a career after university."

Tom Lancaster, Grand Union Orchestra

"Choosing to do the year in industry programme was the best decision I have ever made, I am having the time of my life AND getting valuable experience from it! The support from both the University and SAA-uk has been brilliant, there is always someone to talk to if I am unsure of anything".

Elly Jones, South Asian Arts UK

During the year in industry, students are still classed as full-time students of the University of Leeds, but pay a reduced tuition fee. They are also entitled to the usual student support (grant and student loan), and receive the same student benefits as other full-time students, such as exemption from council tax.

Year in industry students are enrolled on CSER8000 'Work Placement Year'. They receive a great deal of support and training from the Careers Centre and the School of Music, including a workplace visit and regular phone/email contact.

To follow the year in industry option you must first gain a place on the BA Music course through UCAS. At the end of your first year of study you can express an interest in the year in industry. Interested students follow a training programme in association with the University Careers Centre leading to the option of transferring to the year in industry programme.

Students taking a year in industry will be expected to have achieved a minimum average of 60 in their first and second years of study, and demonstrate an excellent record of attendance and reliability.

A high percentage of our graduates (70%) go on to graduate-level employment or study within 6 months of completing their studies, and more often than not they work in music or arts-related industries. Typical careers include: teaching (classroom or instrumental), freelance work as a performer or composer, arts administration and marketing roles (for companies such as Opera North, the Royal Opera House, West Yorkshire Playhouse), radio production and management, and music promotions. There are also a number of other career destinations that have been pursued by our graduates, including those in the fields of business, accounting, management, and Human Resources. As a music graduate you possess a diverse range of skills that relate specifically to music, such as high levels of technical skill, a historical and critical understanding of music, and an ability to apply ideas and methods from a range of related disciplines, including philosophy, psychology and computer science. The study and performance of music develops a broad range of other desirable transferable skills, such as independent thinking, time management, team-working, high levels of self-motivation and discipline and a range of analytical and communication skills that are highly valued in the professional world you will enter after university.

Throughout your time at university you are encouraged to think about your employability through the Leeds for Life scheme, which provides a structure through which you can build and develop your CV and experiences, and through an active programme of careers events organised by the school and university careers service. Support is available for all aspects of your career development, including CV development, application-checking, interview practice and counselling for career options. The school of music hosts bi-weekly careers drop-ins where you can meet one-to-one with a specialist careers advisor who can help you with any aspect of your career development.
