• BA Music
  • BA Music focuses on Western art music as well as aspects of popular and world musics in a course that encourages personal and intellectual development, and which equips you with the fundamental skills expected of a good music graduate. The first level lays the foundation for further study by exposing you to music of many genres and periods, from Baroque sonatas to the latest avant-garde experiments of the 21st century. It introduces you to a variety of analytical and critical approaches, which in later years are developed in modules which currently cover topics as diverse as the supernatural scenes in opera, the music of Duke Ellington, the political and social contexts of Edwardian and Victorian music, or the composers of the Russian nationalist school. The versatile structure offers specialist pathways which explore music from a range of socio-cultural, historical, psychological and technological perspectives. Both solo and ensemble performance, in the School's orchestra, choir, and contemporary music ensembles, are available at all levels of the course.

• BMus Music Performance 'Abroad'
  • BMus Music Performance 'Abroad' is an exciting four-year degree specialising in performance, with the third year spent in a conservatory environment abroad. Current destinations include the USA, Canada, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic (EU subsidies are currently available for study in Europe). You can specialise in western art music or popular and world musics pathways, following academic studies along with colleagues on our other courses. The Year Abroad is an invaluable way to improve your CV, your confidence, your career prospects and your language skills. ABRSM Grade 8 distinction or equivalent in your principal instrumental/vocal study is required at the time of application.

• BA with year in Industry
  • The School of Music is proud to announce its new BA Music with Year in Industry degree programme. This exciting new four-year degree allows BA students in the School of Music to spend their third year working on placement in the music industry. We are establishing internship partnerships with a number of music organisations, including Warner Music, Manchester Camerata and London Symphony Orchestra. Students will also be encouraged to explore a wide range of other possibilities, such as music therapy, music education, orchestral management and band management. Placements may be in the UK or abroad. A Year in Industry is an invaluable way to improve your CV, your confidence, and most of all your employability (many interns go on to work for the same company after graduating). Students starting on the BA course will have the option of transferring onto this degree at the end of their second year.
